Ergothionein (mercapto histidine trimethyl internal salt)
Ergothionine (EGT) is a natural antioxidant that can protect cells in the human body and is an important active substance in the body.
In the field of skincare, ergotamine has powerful antioxidant properties. It can neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidative damage, protect skin cells from external environmental factors, help delay skin aging, and maintain skin elasticity and radiance.
In addition to the field of skincare, ergotamine also has applications in the pharmaceutical industry. For example, in the development of some drugs, it can be used as an auxiliary ingredient to help enhance the stability and efficacy of the drug. In the field of food, there are also studies exploring the possibility of using it as a food additive to enhance the antioxidant properties of food and extend its shelf life.
Ergothionein has high safety. In skincare products, the concentration of additives usually varies depending on the formula and efficacy requirements of the product, generally ranging from 0.1% to 5%.
Important role
Antioxidant
Ergothionein can quickly react with free radicals to convert them into harmless substances, and it is not easily lost. At the same time, it can maintain the levels of other antioxidants (such as VC and glutathione), thus protecting skin cells from oxidative damage.
Its mechanism of action is to efficiently scavenge – OH (hydroxyl radicals), chelate divalent iron ions and copper ions, prevent H2O2 from generating – OH under the action of iron or copper ions, inhibit copper ion dependent oxidation of oxygenated hemoglobin, and also inhibit the peroxidation reaction that promotes arachidonic acid after myoglobin (or hemoglobin) is mixed with H2O2.
Antiinflammatory
The inflammatory response within the body is a common defensive natural response to stimuli, as well as a manifestation of the body’s resistance against damaging factors. Ergothionein can inhibit the production of inflammatory factors, reduce the degree of inflammatory response, and alleviate skin discomfort. It exerts anti-inflammatory effects by regulating intracellular signaling pathways and inhibiting the expression of inflammation related genes. For example, for sensitive or acne prone skin, ergotamine can help reduce inflammation and promote skin repair.
Preventing photoaging
Ergothionein can prevent DNA cleavage caused by ultraviolet light and hydrogen peroxide, and can also scavenge free radicals and absorb ultraviolet radiation to eliminate damage to DNA. Within the ultraviolet absorption range, ergothionein has an absorption wavelength similar to that of DNA. Therefore, ergothionein can serve as a physiological filter for ultraviolet radiation.
Currently, multiple studies have shown that ergotamine is a highly effective sunscreen ingredient that can prevent damage to the skin from UV radiation.
Promote the generation of collagen protein
Ergothionein can promote an increase in the number of fibroblasts and stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin. It promotes the expression of collagen genes and protein synthesis by activating certain signaling molecules within cells.
